Eugene Smith is a traditional blacksmith based in the Texas Hill Country, creating one-of-a-kind forged pieces that blend function, craftsmanship, and artistic design. With more than eight years of professional blacksmithing experience, Eugene produces everything from custom tools and architectural elements to elegant sculptures, chandeliers, and decorative ironwork.

His journey into blacksmithing began long before he ever picked up a hammer professionally. Eugene grew up in West Virginia, where his father was a practicing blacksmith. As a young child—often sitting on the steps of the shop at just six years old—he watched the rhythm of hammer and anvil shape glowing steel. Those early memories planted the seed for what would become a lifelong craft.

Eugene later earned a degree in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the most respected art schools in the country. That artistic background informs his work today, allowing him to approach blacksmithing not just as a trade, but as a form of sculpture and design.

What makes Eugene’s work unique is his versatility and dedication to traditional methods. Every piece is forged hot at the anvil, not cold-shaped or mass-produced. This traditional process strengthens the steel and gives each piece its distinctive character. Unlike many modern fabricators who rely primarily on welding, Eugene practices true forging—an art that has been passed down for centuries.

His work ranges from functional tools and hardware to intricate decorative pieces including textured leaves, flowers, chandeliers, and custom sculptures. He often collaborates closely with clients, guiding them through the design process to create pieces that fit both their needs and their vision.

Eugene also incorporates locally sourced materials whenever possible. Wood used in his pieces often comes from nearby sawmills or logs sourced from neighboring ranches, allowing each project to reflect the natural character of the Hill Country.

Now based in Fredericksburg, Texas, Eugene finds inspiration in the region’s German heritage, craftsmanship traditions, and vibrant artistic community. One of his local contributions includes work for the Fredericksburg Brewing Company, where his designs help reflect the town’s historic European character.

Eugene believes blacksmithing is more than a profession—it’s a way of life. Each day he returns to the forge with the same excitement that first drew him to the craft. Whether creating a custom architectural piece, collaborating with designers such as the Claire Crowe Collection in Dallas, or tackling a completely new challenge, his goal remains the same: to create work that is both timeless and built to last for generations.

As Eugene often says, “Good forged work should last forever.”
